5 tips to avoid bill shock from your air conditioning

  • 12 Feb 2018

February can be Queensland’s hottest month, and air conditioning becomes a necessity rather than a luxury. As summer comes to a close, you may open your electricity bill to see that the high temperatures are reflected in your high energy bill. However, there are some ways you can still use your air conditioning and take the heat off your home and your energy bills!

1. Set to the right temperature.

The less work your air conditioner has to do to maintain a temperature the lower the running cost. The most efficient temperature setting depends on the outdoor temperature.  Aim for a maximum temperature difference of 8°C for heating and cooling. For example, to apply this rule on a 34°C day in summer the air conditioning to 26°C. On a 15°C day in winter set the heating to 23C.

2. Close windows and doors.

Keeping the air where it’s needed means the temperature is better distributed and regulated by your air conditioner. Drawing your blinds or curtains can also help keep the heat out and the cool in.

3. Check your system's features.

A modern machine can be up to 46% more efficient than most older models. Many newer systems have energy efficient features such as inverter technology, smartphone remotes to keep an eye on your usage wherever you are, or zones for ducted systems. Check to see whether you are using your systems full efficiency functionality.

4. Clean and Maintain regularly.

Dirty, clogged filters affect the efficiency of your unit and can affect the air quality. Have your filters cleaned and your air conditioners serviced to ensure they are working at optimum efficiency and providing your home with purified air.

5. Have the right size.

Air conditioning isn’t one-size-fits-all, especially in terms of energy efficiency. If your system is too big for your space it means there are shorter cycles and your unit is turning on and off more than it should. If it’s too small, it has to work harder to get the space to the correct temperature. It’s always best to have a professional provide a quote and assess your space to recommend the right sized system.
