How to tackle your home improvement projects

  • 22 Jul 2019

TV shows make it look so easy: A bit of sawing here and a new paint there and after 30 minutes the renovation work is done. If only it worked like this in reality!

We all know that upgrading your home is a complex and time-consuming process but with the proper preparation, it can be extremely rewarding. Save time, money and avoid stress by following these six steps for your next big home project.

1. Build a detailed project plan

First you want to determine which area(s) of your home you want to improve and what exactly needs to be done. Write a list of things that you are planning to upgrade and don’t forget to write a list of things you’ll need to organise. Think about the style you wish to achieve – what look are you going for?

There are many questions to ask yourself and it’s essential to plan every single aspect of your project, even if something seems like a minor decision. Building a detailed project plan will help you to follow through rather than changing your mind mid-reno.

Another question you should ask yourself is if you require an architect to help you with the planning. After you developed a plan that states the goal for your reno plus sketches of the finished project, you can think about the next step.

2. Budget the unforeseen

Calculating the costs of your home improvement project before you get started is one of the top priorities. Make sure to budget for unexpected costs - a good rule of thumb is to set aside at least 10% of your budget.

Give yourself a maximum spend for each step of the project. You don’t have to spend the maximum amount and there will likely be some areas where you can save, and you might use the savings for a different part of your home. Plan your costs for materials, permits etc. at least 3 to 6 months before you start renovating.

3. Determine your work timeline

Time management is key.

Factor in enough time to get everything done, don’t rush it, because you’re already investing a lot of time and money, so you want the results to be as perfect as they can be. Determine your work timeline 2 to 3 months before the start date and remember to give yourself some extra time for unexpected issues.

Prioritise the individual steps to get the project done: In what order should they be tackled, what has to be done first? Make the schedule as detailed as possible and add extra items during the project if necessary. The better you plan it beforehand, the less complicated it’s going to be during the reno.

Whilst its understandable that you’ll want to see the finished product as soon as possible, remember that patience is also super important when renovating!

4. Arrange necessary approvals as early as possible

If you’re planning a big renovation (e.g. restructuring your home), you might require the approval of the council. Make sure to check the rules thoroughly before you do anything else (at least 6 to 12 months before you start your reno).

5. Choose fittings & fixtures before you get started

Select the flooring, specific tapware and other products early on. The earlier you organise those items, the better, as this will give you time to check if everything you require is on site.

6. Hire professional contractors

You may be able to take on some steps of your projects yourself like time management and budgeting, but when it comes to the hands-on part of the home improvement, it’s usually best to hire a professional, so everything will turn out exactly how you wanted it to. These are the criteria you should look for when it comes to choosing a professional:

  • How long has the company been in business for? The longer they’ve been doing business, the more experienced they are.
  • Make sure you’re hiring licensed professionals with the required certifications
  • Liability insurance for the work they perform is an absolute must
  • Do some research and check their online reviews. The feedback from other customers will give you a good indication of what to expect
