New Plumbing Notifiable Work Laws – Streamlining the system

The new plumbing Notifiable Work Laws will streamline the process involved in carrying out a lot of the plumbing work which previously had to receive local government approval and inspection. The new laws benefit the customer by saving money and ensuring work can proceed at a faster rate, without delays.

The laws come into effect on 1 November 2012 and allow plumbers and drainers (licensed by the Plumbing Industry Council) to perform work classified as ‘Notifiable Work’ without requiring permits or mandatory inspections. The new system is expected to reduce the costs involved in undertaking plumbing work in existing homes for the homeowner, council and tradespeople. In the past, the approval process could cost up to $1600 and could delay work for up to 20 days.

What is classified as ‘Notifiable Work’?

The classification of ‘Notifiable Work’ will apply to most plumbing and drainage work performed in existing homes. Some examples of this work are:

  • Hot water heaters – installing or replacing solar, electric or heat pump
  • Showers, toilets and sinks – installing in existing homes
  • Kitchen and bathroom – additions and renovations
  • Pipe work – altering or extending

What does this mean for the customer?

This means that your job can be carried out today.

Your master plumber is required to complete a Form 4-Notifiable Work within 10 days of work completion and issue you with a copy. The Plumbing Industry Council charges a fee of $35 to submit a Form 4 which will be itemised and added to the plumber’s charge where necessary.

This system is replacing the previous cumbersome permit and inspection process however you may be contacted for a work audit inspection after the work is complete from your local government or the Plumbing Industry Council.
