Trade services – Are you getting value for money?

How do you know you are getting value for money when paying for trade services? One tradesman may charge $XX to install a power point, another could be $XXX, What is the second tradie doing that the first is not? How do we, as consumers, discern between the good, the bad and the just plain dodgy?

No one wants to invest more than necessary to get a job done but knowing when your dollars are being well spent can be quite a challenge in today’s abundant product and service marketplace.

We often hear the comment “I can get it done cheaper by …” and we agree, you probably can get your trade work carried out for less. However, the difference between a job done, and a job done well are colossal.

As modern consumers, we can do so much to ensure we’re getting the best service for our buck. The information age allows for easy access to customer reviews of everything from a new toothbrush or a new car. We can find out so much about a company before we even think of picking up the phone or handing over hard-earned cash.

Don’t get caught out

Do the research. Online reviews, company information, and product testing results can provide a wealth of knowledge for the smart consumer. Poor workmanship or dodgy products become quickly identifiable using the many resources available.

Don’t get stung, look for:

  • Companies that offer warranties and guarantee’s on their products or services.
  • Easy to find information on where a product was made and by whom.
  • Training received by the service provider – this is particularly relevant for tech services or industries which are advancing quickly such as solar, electrical or appliance services.
  • Service providers which use quality products from identifiable, reputable brands.
  • Clearly priced – be sure you know exactly what you’re paying for, know what’s included and what’s not.
  • Products or services that seem too cheap – if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. Cutting corners, using cheap substandard parts or providing the bare minimum of services can all keep the price down so you think you’re getting a deal. But in reality, the chances of the product or work failing and having to be done again in 3 months’ time are great.
  • Safe work practices – these are not just for the tradesperson but also for you, your home and those using it after the tradie is long gone.
  • Companies that encourage feedback and happily display customer reviews.
