What does a gas fitter do?

What is a gas fitter and what do they do? Sometimes it’s hard to know which tradesperson you need for a particular job. Take a look below to see if it’s a gas fitter you need.

What does a gas fitter do?

Gasfitting work is defined in the Gas Standards (Gasfitting and Consumer Gas Installations) Regulations 1999 and refers to any operation, work, or process in connection with the installation, removal, demolition, replacement, alteration, maintenance or repair of a gas installation (the installation or conversion of a gas-fuelled engine is included). Dept of Commerce, WA

This includes heating, lighting, power or refrigeration devices that use gas as their fuel.

Due to the hazardous nature of gas, gas fitters must ensure the safety of gas pipes, connections and gas appliances, together with adequate ventilation.

Do a plumber and a gas fitter do the same thing?

No, plumbers and gas fitters receive different training and have different licencing requirements. However, some plumbers choose to undertake the relevant gas fitting training and certification and vice versa to be able to offer gas fitting or plumbing services to their customers. For some jobs, the skills from both trades are often needed especially when working with gas hot water systems.

Tasks of a gas fitter

  • installation of gas appliances in both domestic and commercial applications such as gas ovens, stovetops, fireplaces, and heaters
  • gas conversions
  • gas connections
  • gas hot water system repair and installation
  • repairs of gas appliances
  • servicing and adjustments to gas-fueled appliances
  • installing gas meters, pipes, bayonets, and other gas fittings
  • adjusting gas pressure
  • gas leak repair and testing
  • gas bottle installation
  • issuing gas compliance certificates

All gas fitters are required to be licenced ensuring they have the correct qualifications and competence to safely carry out any gas work, this includes both LPG (liquefied petroleum gas) and natural gas. Please note – Product warranties and insurance cover can be void if an unlicensed person carries out gas work.
