Gas Compliance Certificates in Brisbane, Gold Coast, Logan, Ipswich, Moreton Bay, Redlands and Sunshine Coast
Ever wondered what a gas compliance certificate is and when you need one? Put simply, it is your guarantee of safety. It acknowledges that your gas appliances and pipework have been installed or serviced by a qualified, licensed gas fitter and that the work complies with the latest Queensland safety standards.
In 2026, these are no longer just paper forms. They are digital records stored in the Queensland Government’s central database, ensuring that your home’s safety history is always accessible for utility providers and future buyers.
Who provides gas compliance certificates?
Gas compliance certificates can only be supplied by qualified and certified gas fitters. At Fallon Solutions, our team consists of Master Gas Fitters who are fully licensed with the QBCC.
Upon completing any gas installation, modification, or extension to an existing service, our fitters use the RSHQ Portal to issue your certificate on the spot. Unlike the old system where you might wait 30 days, your digital certificate is generated and sent to you – and your gas retailer – immediately.
Why do you need a Gas Compliance Certificate?
You cannot legally be supplied with gas (Natural Gas or LPG) without a valid compliance certificate. It is the primary document that states it is safe to “turn the gas on.”
Safety: Protects your family from the risks of gas leaks, fire, or carbon monoxide poisoning.
Legal Compliance: Avoids heavy fines for non-compliant gas work.
Insurance: Most home insurance policies are void if fire or damage is caused by a gas system that lacks a valid certificate.
Connection: Gas retailers (like Origin or Elgas) require this certificate before they will start your supply

When Will You Need to Request a Gas Certificate?
You are legally required to have a licensed professional issue a new GSCC in the following scenarios:
-
First-Time Connections: When connecting a new build to the gas network.
-
Reconnections: If gas has been disconnected from a property for a significant period.
-
Pipework Changes: Installing new gas lines (e.g., for an outdoor kitchen or BBQ bayonet).
-
New Appliance Installation: Replacing or adding a gas hot water system, stove, oven, or fireplace.
-
LPG Cylinder Setup: Installing new 45kg or 90kg LPG bottle systems.
Gas Compliance Plates vs. Digital Records
Historically, gas fitters engraved a metal “Gas Plate” inside your electrical meter box.
-
Residential Homes: While plates are still common, the Digital E-Certificate is now the legally binding record for network gas in Queensland.
-
Caravans, Boats & Food Trucks: These still require a physical compliance plate to be mounted securely, showing the license number, date, and device codes.

Frequently Asked Questions
In Brisbane and SE QLD, a stand-alone gas compliance certificate for an existing system typically starts from $180 to $250 plus service fees. If you are having a new appliance installed (like a gas hot water system), the cost of the digital certificate is usually bundled into the installation price.
For residential properties, a gas compliance certificate remains valid indefinitely until the gas system is modified, extended, or a new appliance is added. However, for caravans and boats, the certificate is only valid for 3 months for the purpose of a sale or registration transfer.
While not always a mandatory “point-of-sale” document like a smoke alarm certificate, most gas retailers will not connect a new owner’s supply without a valid certificate on file. We recommend sellers obtain a fresh digital certificate before listing to prevent delays in settlement or gas connection for the buyer.
As of January 1, 2026, physical metal compliance plates are no longer required for residential homes connected to a gas network. All compliance data is now lodged digitally in the RSHQ Portal. However, caravans, boats, and food trucks must still display a physical national compliance plate under AS/NZS 5601.2 standards.
A Gas System Defect Notice is a formal digital notification issued by a licensed gas fitter when they identify that your gas installation is non-compliant or poses a safety risk. Under 2026 Queensland regulations, these are lodged instantly through the RSHQ Portal. A notice is not a fine; it is a legal requirement to ensure the system is repaired to meet AS/NZS 5601.1:2022 safety standards.
