How to minimise the risk of a plumbing leak disaster in your home

Water leaks can happen anytime and can occur anywhere in the home, regardless if you’re living in an old or new house. They can range from small leaks in the kitchen to major problems in the mains water line. But they all have one thing in common; if left undetected, they can cause significant damage to your home.

Keep an eye out for the following signs that indicate water might be leaking in your home;
  • Damp patches in the carpet
  • Mould growth and water stains on the walls, ceilings and flooring
  • A musty smell
  • Warped or expanded cabinetry
  • Puddles in the garden (even if it hasn’t rained)
  • Plants and trees are growing faster in one area of your yard
  • Increased water bills
Things to check regularly to help prevent the distress of a leak;
  1. Check all your taps in your home
  2. Is your toilet running water? This is one of the most common toilet plumbing issues that shouldn’t be ignored!
  3. Check if your shower is dripping and if you can see any dampness or even mould on the bathroom walls
  4. Flexible water hoses – they are a very common cause of flooding, as they have a limited lifespan. Make sure to have them checked regularly, so you don’t come home to an unpleasant surprise.

  5. Checking for water pipe leaks is not as easy, as you can’t physically see them. A sign that indicates a leak might be a hissing noise coming from the walls or dampness. It’s always best to get a plumber out to check pipe leaks.
  6. Hot water system – check the valves and if there are any signs of rust. For safety reasons, leave the thorough check to the professionals.
  7. Have a Flo Smart Water Shutoff installed

An annual home plumbing inspection can detect potential plumbing issues before they become major problems. Find out more about common issues a plumbing inspection might uncover.
