Things to look out for when choosing a solar PV installer

If you’re looking for a solar solution for your home, you’re likely to begin your solar PV journey by searching for a trustworthy company, before immersing yourself in the fine details of a solar PV installation.

Browsing the internet for solar installers can be incredibly overwhelming; not only is there a massive flood of information available, but it can also be quite tricky to identify potential scammers and companies that practise dodgy workmanship. Unfortunately, not all solar companies that are out there are working in the best interest of the customer.

A report by the Clean Energy Regulator in 2018 found that, out of 3,678 inspections, 748 solar systems were substandard and 80 were deemed unsafe.

So who do you trust?

When choosing solar installers, make sure you know the answers to the following questions.

  • Are you dealing with a solar company that has been in business for a while or are they relatively new to the market?
  • Is the solar company offering turnkey solutions from initial professional consultation to installation and handover? Do they sort out all the government paperwork for you?
  • Does the company have an electrical licence, are they master electricians with a proven safety system and do they employ electricians accredited by the CEC to design their systems?
  • Do they offer blue chip solar components and panels? Or do they sell cheap components that will fail in a few years?
  • Do they offer pricing over the phone?
If so, be very careful because if you receive pricing over the phone, it’s very likely that they base this offer on a one-size-fits-all approach which might not be the ideal solution for you. The quote should be based on your power needs, the roof space available, shadowing, the direction of the sun, the size of the system and personal requirements that are established in the initial in-home consultation.
  • What solar panel and inverter brands are they using? Don’t settle for cheap products that won’t stand the test of time.
