What is Pipe Relining?

Many plumbing jobs aren’t exactly fun to complete, however, a blocked or damaged pipe that is causing a large problem is one of the worst. The smell, the mess… it really isn’t ideal. What is pipe relining?

Pipe relining is a method that plumbers use that enables them to reline the interior of pipes located under the ground or in hard-to-access areas, which can repair pipes damaged due to drain collapse, cracks, ground movement and tree root intrusion.

What is the pipe relining process?

The pipe relining process involves an expert technician:

Inspect the pipe to see what the issue is.
Once the problem is located, it can be decided the best way for pipe relining to occur.
If the pipe is blocked, the blockage will need to be removed – the way this is completed will depend on the cause of the clogged drain. e.g. a tree root as opposed to a mass of oil and fat.
Review the pipe to ensure that all obstructions have been removed and confirm the amount of liner needed.
Feed a pipe liner impregnated with a specially designed resin along the section of the existing pipe where the damage has occurred.
Inflate the liner to fit the pipe.
The resin is then cured to become a hard, impenetrable layer adhering to the inside of the old pipe.
The relining seals any cracks or breaks allowing the drain to flow freely again for years to come.

Who can complete pipe relining?

Although pipe relining has been around for over a decade, it isn’t widely utilised by many plumbing and drainage companies. It is a specialised process that should only be carried out by a fully qualified and experienced plumbing professional, as it requires specialist skills and knowledge. Pros

More cost-effective.
Less time required – generally less than a day.
No digging up of your garden or landscaping.
Less labour and heavy machinery.
No need to dispose of old piping.
Can give your plumbing a longer lifespan.
Increased durability.
Adds value to your home.

Cons

The only notable disadvantage when it comes to pipe relining is that it can not always be used. If the pipe is significantly damaged, with large gaps or holes, pipe relining can not be used as it does not have an adequate structure to mould into.
