Types of water leaks

The fresh water entering your home runs under pressure through the mains water pipe, which means a burst pipe can swiftly turn into a major household issue. The waste water leaving your home via the sewer system and the rainwater moving through stormwater drains are gravity-fed, usually resulting in slower leaks.

With these distinctions, there are generally three types of water leaks:

  • Stormwater leak: Does the leak occur only during rain? If so, it’s likely a stormwater leak.
  • Leaking sewer drain: Does the leak emit a foul odor? This often indicates a sewer leak.
  • Mains water supply: Does the water bubble up? It’s likely a water supply leak.

Regardless of the type, all these scenarios point to one solution – call a Fallon Solutions plumber today!

Identifying the leak

Besides surging water bills, watch for other signs indicating burst pipes or broken drains:

  • Persistent wet areas in the garden.
  • Unexplained plant or tree growth in one garden spot.
  • Dampness or mold on walls, ceilings, or floors.
  • Cracks in concrete, brickwork, or tiles.
  • Water stains on walls, ceilings, or floors.
  • Warped or expanded cabinetry.
  • Chipped or bubbled paint.
  • A musty or damp smell.

Checking the meter

Allocate a time when water won’t be needed for at least two hours. Turn off all taps and water-using appliances such as the dishwasher, washing machine, and hot water system (consult your hot water system manual for correct procedures). Note your home’s water meter reading and recheck after two hours. Any change indicates a potential leak in the mains water pipe.
