How do thermostatic mixing valves work?

A thermostatic mixing valve automatically calculates the input flows of hot and cold water to ensure the correct output temperature is made. Hot water is required to be kept at a storage temperature of 60 degrees Celsius to inhibit the growth of Legionella bacteria, however the safe temperature of water at the tap is no greater than 50 degrees Celsius, to avoid scalding.

Fallon Solutions can carry out thermostatic value testing to ensure that your buildings hot water is at the correct temperature.

Who needs a thermostatic mixing valve?

Fallon Solutions master plumbers recommend that a thermostatic valve be installed on all hot water systems in homes and business to avoid burns and scalding.

The thermostatic mixing valves need to regulate the outlets at temperatures no greater than 50 degrees Celsius in domestic applications and 45 degrees Celsius in applications such as:

  • Early childhood centres
  • Primary and Secondary schools
  • Hospitals
  • Nursing homes
  • Facilities which house the young, aged, sick or disabled.

Thermostatic mixing valve yearly testing

Thermostatic mixing values are required to be installed and serviced yearly to comply with the National Plumbing and Drainage code AS 3500.

Under the legislation thermostatic mixing values require servicing and maintenance at intervals no greater than 12 months. Our administration team can schedule annual maintenance to ensure that you are keeping up to date with your requirements under the relevant legislations.
