spring-cleaning

10 tasks to add to your spring-cleaning checklist

The cold winter months are finally behind us and it’s getting warmer in Queensland. It’s time to prepare for spring which means spring-cleaning and welcoming the freshness of a new season. Besides storing away coats and doonas, there are plenty of other things to add to your spring-cleaning checklist for your home:

1. Dust all your ceiling fans and switch them to summer mode

The dust that accumulates on the surface of ceiling fans is out of sight, but it shouldn’t be out of mind. Give your ceiling fans a wipe down while they are turned off to make sure you and your family are not breathing in dust particles that may possibly fall off the fans.

While you’re at it, flick the switch to set your ceiling fan to summer mode.

Air conditioner filter cleaning

2. Book a filter clean for your air conditioner to improve your indoor air quality

During the winter your air conditioner will have worked hard to heat your home, and over time dust that is drawn into the system gets trapped in the filters. To provide your family with clean air, it is recommended that you have your filters cleaned at least twice a year. 3. Tidy up your garage, shed, basement and attic

These are all big spaces, so you might want to tidy up one area per month. No one expects these areas in your home to be spotless, but after sweeping away the dust and spiderwebs and getting rid of things you never use, you’ll have easier access to all your tools, more storage and everything will be in place.

4. Organise your pantry

Spring is the best time to clean out kitchen cabinets, drawers and your food pantry to ensure it is organised ahead of the warmer months. Check from shelf to shelf for goods that have expired or items you never use, as it is likely they’re just taking up vital space. Empty and wipe one section at a time and you’ll be done before you know it!

5. Give your carpet a clean

Carpets are exposed to dust, hair, dirt or even pet fur every single day, therefore it’s wise to have them cleaned regularly. Call in a professional or do the job yourself by renting a cleaning machine.

6. Clean your mattress

Mattress clean

On average we spend one third of our lifetime asleep! That’s reason enough to make sure our mattress is in a good condition and free of dust, dust mites and body soil. Vacuum it first and then treat stains with a solution of dish detergent and water.

7. Wash your curtains

Curtains attract airborne dust, pollen and odour, so they should be cleaned at least once a year. Most curtains can be simply thrown in the washing machine, just check the panels for care instructions to be sure and while you’re at it, also give the rods a good clean.

8. Reorganise your linen closet

Besides dusting the closet, you may need to wash some linen or send them to the dry cleaner.

9. Unclog your house gutters

With summer comes storm season and heavy rain. All the branches, leaves and debris that accumulated in your gutter can cause rainwater damage and flooding, so make sure to keep your gutters clean.

10. Sort your documents

Sorting documents

Dedicate at least one day or even a week per year to gather all your important documents and organise them in labelled folders, so you won’t have to worry about remembering where to find them when they’re needed.

We know that some of the chores listed are the less fun tasks we tend to put off, but once complete, it will make your home a much more comfortable place to be as we head towards springtime!
